Mircea Cantor wrote the words Cer variabil (Changing skies) on the ceiling with candle smoke, pointing out the shifting paradigms in the world around us. The exhibition Cer variabil takes a deeper look at the nuances and the different interpretations that can exist simultaneously, both from an individual and a collective perspective.
"My choice of Cer variabil (the title of a work by Mircea Cantor) as a topic of the new exposition in the Collectors House, is a personal one. In my experience, the Iron Curtain as a fault line between Eastern and Western Europe still exists. The continuous emphasis on this boundary and the confrontation with the presupposed difference between East and West has imprinted a defensive and prejudiced opinion in me regarding Eastern Europe. Even after the fall of The Berlin Wall (and the vanishing of the Iron Curtain) the prejudiced thinking pattern did not simply disappear.
The exposure to the visual artists of the ‘School of Cluj’ – a city in Transylvania – through Mircea Pinte, economist and art collector, gave me a rich insight into the quality and vitality of the contemporary visual arts from the Eastern side of the torn Iron Curtain. Mircea Pinte started collecting art in 2004 and promoted contemporary visual artists from the region of Cluj through Galeria Plan B internationally. These together contributed to the current dialogue between works of art from the Mircea Pinte Collection and the collectie G+W nederland in the Collectors House.
The subjects of the works of art collected in the East and West of Europe show remarkable resemblance to each other, in which the relationship between private and public domain is central. The unique context and the execution of the concepts expressed in the works of art show a distinctive authenticity. Even though the world is changing constantly, when we look at these Eastern and Western works of art it becomes clear that there is more that binds us than divides us.

Mihnea Mircan has written a text for the exhibition. Based in Bucharest until 2010, Mircan (b. 1976) has curated exhibitions such as Low-Budget Monuments at at the Romanian Pavilion / 52nd Venice Biennial and History of Art, the, at the David Roberts Art Foundation, London. Currently he is the artistic director of Extra City in Antwerp (B).

Cer variabil (Veranderend zwerk) schrijft Mircea Cantor met kaarsenrook op het plafond en wijst hiermee op de verschuivende paradigma’s van de wereld om ons heen. De tentoonstelling Cer variabil gaat in op de nuances en de verschillende interpretaties die op eenzelfde moment naast elkaar kunnen bestaan, onder andere vanuit het perspectief van het individu en het collectief.
'De keuze voor Cer variabil (de titel van het werk van Mircea Cantor)als onderwerp voor de nieuwe expositie van het Collectors House is persoonlijk. In mijn beleving is er nog altijd sprake van het Ijzeren Gordijn als breuklijn in Europa tussen Oost en West. Door de voortdurende nadruk op deze breuklijn en confrontatie met het vooronderstelde verschil tussen Oost en West is bij mij een defensieve en bevooroordeelde attitude ten opzichte van Oost-Europa ingeslepen. Ook na de val van De Muur (en het verdwijnen van het Ijzeren Gordijn) is dat ingeslepen denkpatroon niet vanzelf opgeheven.
De kennismaking met de beeldende kunst van de “artists of the 2000 generation” in Cluj, een plaats in Transsylvanië, via Mircea Pinte, econoom en verzamelaar uit Cluj, gaf mij een rijk inzicht in de kwaliteit en vitaliteit van hedendaagse beeldende kunst aan de andere kant van het gescheurde Ijzeren Gordijn. Mircea Pinte ging vanaf 2004 hedendaagse beeldende kunstenaars uit de eigen regio verzamelen en hielp een aantal van deze kunstenaars via Galeria Plan B, om hun entree in het internationale kunstenveld te doen. Dit zijn redenen voor de huidige dialoog tussen werken uit de Mircea Pinte Collection en de collectie G+W nederland in het Collectors House.
De onderwerpen van de kunstwerken uit Oost en West Europa tonen opvallende overeenkomsten, waarbij de verhouding tussen privaat en publiek domein centraal staat. Verder tonen de eigen context alsook de uitwerking van concepten binnen de kunstwerken onderscheidende authenticiteit. Hoe snel de wereld ook constant in beweging blijft: er is meer dat ons bindt dan scheidt afgaande op de kunstwerken uit Oost en West.

Bij de tentoonstelling verschijnt een tekst van Mihnea Mircan (1976). Hij werkte tot 2010 vanuit Boekarest als onafhankelijk schrijver en was curator van onder meer Low-Budget Monuments in het Roemeense Paviljoen/ 52ste editie van de Biënnale van Venetië en van History of Art, the, in de David Roberts Art Foundation in London.
